Ayushmann was an absolute natural while playing a cop – Anubhav Sinha

Ayushmann Khurrana has made a habit of experimenting with new genres with each film. And one thing which is common amongst his choices is the fact that they are socially relevant, engaging and entertaining at the same time. Now, Ayushmann is all set to shake the caste system of the country as a cop in Anubhav Sinha’s next film, Article 15. Set in a tehsil called Lalgoan in Uttar Pradesh (India), this film is a story of an IPS officer, Ayan Ranjan and his fight against ‘India’s caste system’. Producer-director Anubhav Sinha has surprised everyone by casting Ayushmann as a cop. The filmmaker explains his choice, “Ayushmann was an absolute natural while playing a cop. There was this irresistible urge to veer close to the popular heroic versions earlier played by Ranveer Singh, Salman Khan, and Anil Kapoor but somehow Ayushmann managed to tread Into uncharted territory to carve out a heroic yet super realistic cop.”

The director goes on to compare Ayushmann’s portrayal of a cop with that of Amitabh Bachchan in the 1973 drama, Zanjeer. “The last time I saw this combination in a performance was by Mr. Bachchan and yes, Ayushmann’s cop is angry too,” he says proudly.

This is Anubhav’s first collaboration with Ayushmann Khurrana. Apparently, the director has called Ayushmann for a rom-com post the release of Mulk but when they started discussing ideas, Article 15, excited Ayushmann the most. So they decided to make this realistic cop drama, instead of that rom-com.

Article 15 is scheduled to release on 28 June in India. The film has been selected as the opening film for the 10th edition of London Indian Film Festival to be premiered on 20 June.
